Normally I dont blog on here but I feel that this message needs to be spread so I am posting a blog that I wrote on my myspace page. Please take a moment to read this and please be respectful.

I need to be serious for a moment. I need to take the time and rant, talk, and just get this off my chest. On February 12, 2008 a 15 year old boy named Lawrence ( “Larry” ) King was murdered by a fellow student. Larry was gay.

Several days before he was killed Larry asked a fellow student, Brandon, to be his Valentine and somehow, Brandon got the message that it is so horribly wrong to be gay that it was better to shoot Larry in the head then to simply decline to be his Valentine. Brandon is 14 years old, old enough to know better but still young enough to be impressionable. Hatred like this doesn’t come from within us, it is taught, through films, through politics, through other people and through religion. Ellen Degeneres talked about Larry on her show and she asked us to pay attention to how often Gay people are at the butt of joke. Just reflecting on this, and really putting it to the front of my brain. I have thought about movies that I have watched in the past, tv shows that I watch now, many of them have contained many jokes about gay people. As Ellen said “laughing at someone cause they are gay is just the beginning its starts with laughing at someone, then its verbal abuse, then its physical abuse, then its this kid Brandon killing a kid like Larry.” Ellen is right the message that kids are receiving is negative and the message needs to change.

Growing up as a gay person myself has not been easy for me because I grew up in a very homophobic household, because my parents were taught by their parents to dislike gay people, and their religion promotes homophobia and through things like that my parents disowned me. I took it rough at first, I felt so ashamed of who I was because of the things my parents and my family said. That for years I was hidden away afraid to come out and be proud but then I realized that this is me and this is who I will always be. I was born gay. I am proud of who I am and I will never hide from my sexuality again. I am out.

Larry was lucky to be able to be out, proud and to be himself. He embraced it and he was killed for it. What kind of message are we sending to our young generations? That it’s ok to be gay as long as you don’t offend someone else otherwise you could be killed for it? What did Larry do that was so wrong that he had to be killed for it? He asked another boy to be his valentine…so what? Why couldn’t this young boy have said listen I am flattered that you think that of me but honestly I am not gay so I decline your offer. Instead he went out got a gun and shot Larry in the head, killing him, taking away a life that was so precious simply because Larry was gay. This kind of message is wrong, Brandon should have known better, his parents should have taught, acceptance, and tolerance, and respect. Acceptance should be taught in schools, should be embraced because we are all different. But it wasn’t and not only was an innocent life taken away far too soon but Brandon’s life will never be the same again, at 14 his entire life is ruined because he got the wrong message.

It’s an election year, I encourage you to vote, but I also encourage you to take a look at who you are voting for. As Ellen stated on her show ask yourself does this person believe we are all equal under the law or not? Do some serious research before you cast your vote this year. If you feel that the person you intend on voting for doesn’t believe we are all equal change your vote.

This Country prides itself on being free, but is everyone really free? When a gay person cannot serve openly in the Military because of who they are? When a man and man and a woman and a woman who love each other so much that they want to commit themselves to marriage but are not allowed to because it is against the law? When a gay couple would like to adopt a child but isn’t allowed to simply because they are gay? When a gay couple who has been together for 20 years and their partner is ill or in the hospital isn’t allowed to visit because they are not recognized as a real couple? Ask yourself is this really freedom? It’s not and having this kind of message banning gay couples from experiencing the same rights as a straight couple would is really disturbing and that is the kind of thing that promotes hatred.

Homophobia needs to stop. Hatred needs to stop. I am gonna quote Ellen Degeneres on this “I am not a second class citizen; Larry was not a second class citizen. It’s ok if you’re gay.”

Go home tonight, give your kid a hug and teach them acceptance, love and tolerance. NO ONE should have to die because of who they are.

RIP Larry King
